In-house Attorney/Project Officer at Ethiopian Labour Rights Watch (ELRW)

Job Description


Ethiopian Labour Rights Watch (ELRW) is a recently set up civic organization that works on labor related issues in Ethiopia. The founders have extensive experience in the legal and policy discourse of the country with a strong conviction that basic labor rights and legal education programs are crucial. ELRW focuses on the provision of legal aid to workers, labor rights advocacy through public interest litigation and labor rights education through trainings to workers, union leaders, law enforcement officials and local association representatives.

Job Summary

In line with its core objectives, ELRW is in the process of launching a Legal Aid and Advocacy Project that aims at providing legal aid to employees and trade unions in selected locations, labor rights monitoring, research and public interest litigation with funding obtained from the Levi Struass Foundation. The project officer is responsible for the overall management and legal related activities of the project.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure the project is implemented as outlined in the project document and funding agreement.
  • Identify the specific locations for the implementation of the project and prepare a detailed action plan.
  • Set up a legal aid center which will be accessible to individual workers who cannot afford their legal defense.
  • Provide and coordinate legal aid by other ELRW staff and volunteers.
  • Develop legal aid manuals, labor litigation templates and violation tracking tools;
  • Network with stakeholders, including trade unions, labor and social affairs bureaus and courts.
  • Organize trainings and workshops on labour rights related issues.
  • Identify research topics and oversee that they are conducted.
  • Assist staff of ELRW to secure future funding.
  • Expected to travel 15% of her/his time
  • Any other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

Reports to

  • The Executive Director


  • One year (2020) with the possibility of extension

Job Requirements


Applicants for this position should possess the following qualifications:

  • LLB Degree in Law or equivalent from a recognized and reputable college or university
  • Previous experience in an NGO environment
  • Two years of relevant experience
  • Attention to detail, accuracy, analytical and presentation skills
  • Good communication skills, team player, willing to work long hours when needed
  • Excellent written and spoken English and Amharic
  • Proficiency in computer application software and MS Office, such as Windows, Word, Excel, Outlook, and Internet
  • High level of passion, reliability and integrity
